CLOUT. DO YOU HAVE IT?

Clout is important in establishing yourself in the kind of medical practice that you seek.   It remains important in developing the type of practice you desire.  Yet many medical residents and physicians often enter into their practice searches with little confidence in their ability to influence practice negotiations.
Medical practice is business . . .
BIG BUSINESS . . .
and many residents and physicians feel ill-prepared to wisely navigate through the array of potential practice organizations. In a practice search:

  • Clout (influence, power) is what you have when you enter into a practice search with an ability to walk away from the opportunity if it isn’t a fit.
  • Clout is what you have when the opportunity is more in need of a physiatrist than you are in need of the opportunity.

Do you desire a physiatry practice in a specific geographic location?  A small geographic search affords you little clout in contract negotiations.
Does your search include both in-patient and out-patient practices?  A narrow search limits your number of practice opportunities thus reducing your ability to influence practice negotiations.
When your search is limited, you give up something to get something; and typically what you give up is clout in negotiations.
Be prepared and informed.  Consider the following search tips and establish your priorities.  You . . . and your search parameters will determine your ability to negotiate a practice offer.   You . . . and your search parameters will determine your clout.

  • Begin your search early
  • Determine if the practice and geographic setting are a fit for you
  • Assess the practice structure to determine if it is well-organized
  • Become informed about how practice decisions are made
  • Consider both practice expectations and financial compensation
  • Use your recruitment and financial resources and prepare to negotiate
  • And lastly, if it seems too good to be true . . . it probably is!
