TRANSITIONING FROM EMPLOYEE TO PRIVATE PRACTICE
|

| Transitioning from an employee of a group practice to a personal private practice may seem overwhelming, but the following steps should ease some of the anxiety regarding the process.
Determine a form of doing business
The simplest form of business is to operate under your social security number. You can begin operations immediately.
Another option is to operate with a trade name such as Atlantic Rehab. This will require obtaining a new Tax ID from the IRS, and filing a trade name certificate with the county.
You may also operate as an LLC, which may require a new Tax ID from the IRS. An attorney should set this up.
The last option is to operate as a Professional Corporation (PC) which also requires a new Tax ID, and should be set up by an attorney. In addition, a new NPI (Type 2) should be obtained.
The individual benefits of each are beyond the scope of this article.
Obtain a UPS mailbox
Obtain a box at a UPS store near your home. Although it costs more, I have found UPS stores to be more efficient than a Post Office Box. DO NOT have checks sent to the facility address, which will invariably cause some of your checks to be inadvertently cashed by the facility.
New bank account
Open a business bank account with your business name and TAX ID.
Credentialing
First update your Medicare enrollment. Use CMS’s on-line service, PECOS, to accomplish this. Credentialing should be done for the Blue Cross & Blue Shield & Medicaid. You should also sign up (if not already set up) with CAQH, which will simplify credentialing with commercial carriers. There will be other carriers with which you should enroll, but these vary by location.
These steps will greatly assist in the transition from Employee to Private Practice.
